What to Do When a Toothache Starts

Tooth pain can have many causes. Here is how to respond calmly while arranging care.

Notice the pattern

A toothache may feel sharp, dull, throbbing, or triggered by cold, heat, or biting. Pay attention to when it starts, how long it lasts, and whether swelling or a bad taste appears.

Keep the area clean

Rinse gently with warm water and clean between the teeth to remove trapped food. Use pain medicine only as directed on the label or by a clinician, and avoid putting tablets directly against the gum.

Book an assessment

Pain is a signal, not a diagnosis. A dental exam and X-ray may be needed to check for decay, infection, gum problems, cracks, or a bite issue.

When to Call the Clinic

This article is general dental education. If you have pain, swelling, bleeding, trauma, a broken tooth, or symptoms that keep returning, book an appointment so a dentist can examine you properly.
