Bad Breath: Common Causes and Next Steps
Persistent bad breath may come from the tongue, gums, cavities, dry mouth, or medical factors.
Start with plaque and the tongue
Bacteria collect on the tongue and around the gumline. Brushing the tongue gently, cleaning between teeth, and improving gumline brushing can reduce many common odors.
Look for dental causes
Cavities, food traps, gum disease, faulty restorations, and poorly cleaned dentures can all contribute to bad breath. A dental exam can identify areas that home care misses.
Dry mouth can make it worse
Saliva helps wash the mouth. Medicines, dehydration, mouth breathing, and some health conditions can reduce saliva and make odors more noticeable.
